Can a New Running Outfit Actually Get Me Exercising Again?

Apparently if you treat yourself to new gym kit, you're more likely to actually go to the gym. I haven't been to the gym in about a year, so I'll try anything. I have been on "caternity" leave (yes, it's a thing). I got cats last November and would much rather chill with them than exercise. Lumping toy balls at them counts as a calorie-burning activity, right? They've been in my life almost a year, and since they're not actual human babies, I've probably overused that excuse.

Try as I might, I just can't seem to muster up enough motivation to actually work out. Hence why I found myself in Lululemon on a cold, rainy morning trying to prise my soft body into figure-hugging Lycra. When it comes to well-fitting kits, Lululemon is up there as one of my go-to brands. Its Align Pant (ВЈ88) is the only pair of leggings I fly in-short haul, long haul, you name it-and its leggings have a naked feel that makes them ridiculously comfortable.

So I decided to try on a few different running outfits. With the weather set to be nice this month, I figured gentle jogs on a sunny day would be better than going to the gym. (Let's face it: My gym membership expired ages ago.) Keep scrolling to see the outfits I tried on, the kit I chose and whether or not it actually got me exercising again. I know you're all on the edge of your seats.

My rail of chosen kit and my name on the changing room door. Did you know Lululemon offers tailoring for leggings?

Lululemon came from Canada and has a suitably easygoing vibe. The staff members are helpful, but they aren't pushy or in your face. I was assigned my own changing room where the assistant hung my items as I was browsing.

Inside the changing rooms, there's a photo booth and a wall where you can put your goals. Love.

If you're a Lululemon first-timer, it's worth knowing that the brand uses U.S. sizing. For example, if you're a size UK 10 or 12 like me, at Lululemon you'll be a size U.S. 6 or 8. I got confused and ended up with a ton of size U.S. 4 clothes, which is why in the pictures below I'm sucking everything in. When it came to selecting my sizes, I opted for a size 6 in the top and leggings. In the bra, I chose a size 8. If you're shopping online, know that the clothing is pretty true to size.

What I Tried On

When it comes to working out, I like leggings that are snug and won't fall down (you know, the type that holds your bottom in in all the right places). This sports bra was a snug fit and went on like a traditional bra with a hook-and-eye clasp. It would be my top pick if I was running long distances or doing a HIIT class. The vest was super flattering, and I definitely felt like it made me look slimmer. The pattern also added interest without being garish.

This co-ord scared me on the rack (it looked a bit too glam for me), but it ended up fitting really well, and I felt confident in it. I do think the top could possibly ride up if it's too tight, though, which is why I didn't snap it up in the end. The mesh panels on both pieces elevated the look and would make for great ventilation during a sweaty session. The slightly longer length of the crop top was also really flattering. I paired it with a floral bra that peeked out from under the mesh panel.

What I Chose

I'm obsessed with this neon long-sleeved top. It's the kind of top that's ideal for wearing on long runs on cold winter days (or for wearing to and from the gym). The fabric is super smart and prevents odour-causing bacteria from getting in. The thumb holes in the arms are a nice touch, too. There's something I find really aesthetically pleasing about blue and yellow, so I snapped up a pair of navy leggings to go with the highlighter-yellow top I bought. The leggings have compression technology (ideal for longer runs), plus they're sweat-wicking. I also opted for a white bra that gave me a good amount of support. I loved the crisscross cutout detail at the back.

The kit helped get me out of my rut and felt really comfortable to run in. I'm convinced this outfit will take me from boxing to HIIT and running to weight lifting, so it's well worth the spend.
