Issa Rae is the kind of down-to-earth girl we want to hang out with on a regular basis. The titles alone of her series Awkward Black Girl and Insecure reflect a relatable nature so many women can identify with, but couple those with a tangible character navigating her way through the sometimes painfully uncomfortable motions of life and it's just the mirror women-especially women of color-need. An example of down-to-earth off-screen Issa: Each and every product used to create her hair look for tonight's Met Gala was less than $4. To start, Felicia Leatherwood for Suave Professionals washed and conditioned Rae's hair with Suave Professionals Avocado + Olive Oil Smoothing ShampooВ ($4) and ConditionerВ ($4).Courtesy of Suave Professionals
Leatherwood echoed the "celestial" theme by utilizing embellishments: "I added Senegalese hair adornments to incorporate Issa's heritage into her look," says Leatherwood. "We wanted something that would play off the theme, but we also wanted to create something stunning and polished."
To create the braids, Leatherwood applied Avocado + Olive Oil Leave-In ConditionerВ ($3) to ensure Rae's hair was "moisturized and flexible for styling." She then parted the hair into small sections, cornrowed the hair up, and secured it with bobby pins. Lastly, the front braids were adorned with hair jewelry and beads.Courtesy of Suave Professionals
Finally, Rae's hair was misted with Natural Hold Micro Mist HairsprayВ ($4) to smooth flyaways for "a polished look that will last all night long." We're sure Rae will turn heads at the Met Gala after-parties with her hair still perfectly intact.
