Derma-Rolling 101: Erase Eye Bags and Wrinkles With This Easy Tool

As a beauty editor, I operate by the MO that I'll tryВ just about anything at least once. More telling, however, are the products and procedures I return to after that trial run. Two years ago, I opted to try derma-rolling on a lark; if nothing else, "I voluntarily rolled tiny needles into my face" seemed like a good story to tell (or write). All this time later, it's a weekly habit, and still one of the best things that ever happened to my skin.В I've watched my under-eye bags disappear, I've plumped my lips, and, overall, my complexion has never been so consistently even or bright.

Since I've already extolled the benefits of derma-rolling several times over on Byrdie, suffice to say that it's one of my more poorly kept secrets. But in my opinion, it would only be a disservice to keep such an effective at-home treatment on the DL. Micro-needling boosts collagen production, fills in fine lines, and even increases product absorption up to 90%-no fancy ultrasonic infuser required.В It's affordable and easy to boot. AndВ just to bust a common myth for the umpteenth time: No, it's not painful.В

Watch our video tutorial below to learn how to use a derma-roller at home.

1. Apply a thick layer of serum or moisturizer to clean skin. AvoidВ skincare products with any reactive ingredients like retinol or vitamin C if you have particularly sensitive skin; the combination of the needles andВ these ingredients can be harsh. We love Youth to the People's Age Prevention SerumВ ($62).

2. Start to roll your derma-roller across your skin, applying as much pressure asВ you can comfortably tolerate.В (FYI, Stacked Skincare's Collagen-Boosting Micro-Roller, $30, is one of the best ones on the market.) For each area you target, you'll want to roll horizontally, vertically, and then diagonally, and repeat.В Be careful around the eyes and lips, as the skin is more delicate here.В Never roll your eyelids.

3. Finish off by applying another layer of serum or moisturizer.В Counteract any inflammation with First Aid Beauty's Anti-Redness SerumВ ($36).

4. Repeat as necessary,В up to twice a week.
