9 Beauty and Fitness Lessons From Gwyneth Paltrow

In the flesh, Gwyneth Paltrow is every bit as poised and lissome as you would imagine. Arriving-or rather, gliding-through double doors in a sunlight-drenched room in Venice's Casa del Mar, she greets everyone with a winsome “Hi!” and perches on a corner chair, radiating light and cheery energy possessed only by those who consider exercise an enjoyable pastime. I'm here to learn about her new makeup collection, Phyto-Pigments, launched in collaboration with Juice Beauty (for which she serves as creative director).

“The hope was that we would be able to create a line of organic makeup that worked as well as all the conventional benchmarks,” Paltrow explains-her confident tone implies success. Throughout our interview, she swipes on cherry-colored liquid lipsticks made with crushed rose petals, raves about the line's primer with the exuberance of a proud parent (“Ours is the best one on the market!”), and doles out plenty of beauty wisdom (more on that later).

It's no wonder Paltrow is so good at preaching this elevated organic, holistic lifestyle-she is the ultimate embodiment of it herself, and she just seems so happy. Or is it satisfied? Is there even a difference, and if so, does it matter? In the world of Gwyneth Paltrow, detoxes and petrochemical-free mascaras seem to lead to a more fulfilled life-and considering her glowing, practically ethereal exterior, we'll gladly drink the Kool-Aid (or, should we say, fresh-pressed green juice).

On her surprising beauty guru:

“Apple gives me beauty advice. She's obsessed with makeup, and she watches YouTube tutorials all the time; it's crazy. She was in a production of "High School Musical" this past weekend, and her makeup was incredible. It was full-on makeup, and she did it herself. For Halloween, she did my makeup and her makeup. I'll support whatever she wants to do. The most important thing for me is that she feels really comfortable in her own skin.”

On her “little eyebrow”:

“I've never been a person who has taken crazy, crazy beauty risks. In the '90s, there was that little eyebrow. I don't look fondly back at that little eyebrow. There were a lot of makeup errors in the '90s-the very matte thing and the thin eyebrows.”

On admitting beauty is pain:

“The craziest beauty treatment I've ever done was probably when I was in London, and I saw this dermatologist who basically took a teensy acupuncture needle with vitamins and injected it into the surface of your skin. I was like, 'What the heck am I doing?' But I just went with it, and it was really great. It was cool. It was great; it really didn't even hurt that much. It just seemed weird.”

On vices:

“I just did a whole month of detox and eating from the inside out. I really try to take care of myself. I try to sleep. I try to take a lot of water. I exercise five days a week. I make my shakes and have my spirulina and omegas and my superfoods, and I also really like french fries and martinis. There is always a balance that I'm working with, but I really do believe in not depriving yourself of anything.”

On unconventional cleansing:

“I'm obsessed with the Goop Juice Beauty's Luminous Melting Cleanser. You dig some out, you emulsify it, you put it on, and it takes off all the makeup and impurities. You wipe it off with a hot washcloth; it comes with a little towel. It just leaves your skin so glowing.”

On sticking to a routine:

“I basically have the same routine every day. I get up with the kids, make breakfast, take them to school. Then I go to the Tracy Anderson gym in Brentwood and I work out there, and then I start my day. So before the office opens, I'm done with all my stuff. By 9:30, I'm done.”

On her body after 40:

“I think before 40, I thought that as long as I work out five days a week, I never had to think about food. Since I've turned 40, I'm like, 'What the heck is going on over there?' I still do my same workout, but I have to be slightly more disciplined. I try to push myself harder because I can't diet; I can't be like, 'Oh I'm not going to eat that,' so I try to push myself a little bit more. I started wearing a heart monitor in cardio class, which actually I find really motivating, and it's attached to the phone, and you can check how I'm doing. So that's helped me a lot-little tricks like that after a certain age.”

On listening to her shrink:

“After I started doing Tracy Anderson, my entire body changed. I don't do anything else. Sometimes, I'll do a boxing class because my shrink tells me it's good to do once in a while, though.”

On enjoying working out:

“The hard thing about Tracy Anderson is that it takes a while to learn all the bits of choreography, but once you know it, you feel confident with the steps. They're blasting Beyoncé, and you don't think Ugh, I'm exercising. I get swept up with it, and the hour goes by fast.”
