Whether she's walking the Victoria's Secret runway, attending shows at fashion week, or smiling at cameras at an A-list event, social media photos of Gigi Hadid usually inspire a lot of beauty inspiration. That's probably why her namesake makeup collection with Maybelline was such a hit (after all, her California-girl hair and nude lip look are famous).
However, According to Vogue, Gigi Hadid's latest project, which was just unveiled on Instagram, is inspiring some controversy and debate. It's a video for Love magazine's annual Advent calendar, in which buzzy celebs are featured doing a whole host of activities. For Hadid, it was a mixture of kickboxing and shadowboxing. In the video, she's wearing a red sports bra and cropped leggings as she punches, kicks, and stretches her way to the beat of the music. But it's not her outfit that has people talking. It's her underarms, which appear to be unshaven-something that's definitelyВ outside the norm for a supermodel.
Keep scrolling to see the video for yourself.
The video currently has over 1200 comments, which is more than double what the other clips on the account have. The majority seem to focus on her underarms. Some are supportive, like one social media user who wrote, "Love her and her armpit hair!!" Another said, "I praise Gigi for this! Show the world that women DO grow body hair and that it shouldn't be something to be ashamed of just because we're female." Others… well, not so much. One simply wrote, "Shave please." Another said, "Get a razor."
As Vogue notes, unshaven underarms definitely aren't a new idea. For one, they're natural. Body hair is natural. Plus, other celebrities have shown unshaven underarms in the past, including Miley Cyrus, Julia Roberts, and Jemima Kirke. Whether it was a personal preference or they were trying to destigmatize female body hair, we're here for it. After all, beauty and personal care are just that: personal. Women should be able to style their hair and do their makeup (or neither) however they want to without criticism. As one commenter wrote, "Don't be so annoying or waste your time saying that she needs to wax her armpits. She's free to show her body whatever she wants, she's free. Andddd it's 2017, almost 2018."
Ironically, Hadid may have spurred this dialogue unknowingly. In fact, it may not even be hair, but lint from the blue sweater she wears at the beginning of the clip or, as her makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, shared in the comment section of his post, "It's from the sweat & the dust of that building." Either way, we think we can stop focusing on all of that and start focusing on her perfect boxing form (go, Gigi!) and cool and edgy makeup look. Yet again, we're inspired to venture outside of our beauty comfort zone by Gigi Hadid.
