After fashion week comes the inevitable time when we're all a little stir-crazy-it's still warm enough (technically, depending on where you live) to wear your summer makeup, but those warm, moody colors are calling your name. We can't help but look to the (very near) future with anticipation like a kid on Christmas.
To satiate our autumnal makeup palette cravings and help us plan for the change in seasons, we reached out to veteran celebrity makeup artist Sir John as well as makeup artist of the moment Katie Jane Hughes. For her part, Hughes is everywhere right now, painting faces backstage at NYFW, uploading Instagram images worthy of magazine spreads, and collaborating with cool-girl brands like Glossier. Sir John, well, he worked on tour with BeyoncГ©-enough said. Needless to say, their makeup advice is golden. So when they say a fall makeup trend is about to blow up, we're ready to brush it on, blend it out, spritz it all over, and call it a day.
Below, find their top five most talked-about fall makeup trends.Imaxtree
"The new color theme I've been seeing people playing with is reds, berries, oranges, and coppers," Hughes notes. We saw the trend expertly personified backstage before this season's Cynthia Rowley show. "I couldn't be more excited about it. These colors are incredibly flattering on everybody and look super dreamy-but with a Hollywood kind of twist. "There's a playfulness that's to the forefront with shadow or pencils-using just a dot of color somewhere around the eye," says Hughes. Like finger painting, it's cool because you can finally color outside the lines (a process of application Pat McGrath recommends with all her products). "Because this look is so simple, you can pretty much do anything else on your face, albeit a bold lip or gloss. It's also incredibly easy to achieve," says Hughes.
Just in time for crisp fall leaves and perfectly broken-in blue jeans, Sir John is back with a new makeup forecast: "denim" eyeliner. "I am obsessed with this look," he says. "It is one of my favorites. It's super on trend for fall, and anyone can wear it!" While cobalt blue has certainly made the rounds before, this time, the look he created on Joan Smalls is reminiscent of a denim-on-denim outfit with an intense, thick liner above and below her top and bottom lashes.
"Cobalt is one of those shades that is universally flattering for anyone, at any age, with any skin tone," Sir John continues. "The denim-cobalt look brightens up your eyes with essentially just one product-the liner. If you want to dial it up, you can also pair cobalt liner with a merlot, plum, or red liquid lip. It's chic with a T-shirt and jeans or dressed up for an evening out."
Multifaceted Eye Shadow
"This term refers to using multiple textures on the eyes-like a smoky pencil all over, then some glitter in the inner corners, and a gloss just in the center of the lid," explains Hughes. Like this season's Libertine look, it's incredible to look at-almost holographic. "It's all about playing with shadows, enhancing the shadows, and capturing the light. There's a romantic mess to this eye because it looks as though the moon is hitting the ocean and reflecting. I'd recommend keeping the rest of your makeup super simple and just adding a sheer nude lipstick."@katiejanehughes
"For a while, we've been seeing a trickling of soft, blurred lips on the runway, and now I think people are going to embrace it more in their daily lives," says Hughes. It's true: Bobbi Brown even came out with a lip color meant to look blotted down. "This look has a more romantic vibe than lip looks that are super precise. Apply your lipstick as usual and then just take your ring finger and soften the edges at the lip line."Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette $65ShopStila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner $22ShopL'OrГ©al Paris Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner $8ShopToo Cool for School Glam Rock Urban Shadow $25ShopBobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color $29Shop
