Last week, I was blessed with the unique opportunity to attend a brunch on behalf of True Botanicals-the natural and sustainable skincare brand that's beloved by celebrities like Zazie Beetz, Olivia Wilde, and Laura Dern. In fact, Laura Dern was in attendance. The Jurassic Park and Big Little Lies actress was there to talk about her new partnership with the brand and to discuss the importance of clean beauty, ingredient transparency, female empowerment, and other relevant topics. It was a bit surreal, as I never imagined I'd lay witness to Laura Dern discussing any of these things (or anything at all, for that matter), but there I was on a sunny Thursday in Los Angeles, drinking up Dern's words like they were the cup of cold brew in my hand.
While there were many notable moments in her address to me and my fellow brunchers, there was something she said about one of the brand's products that made me reach for my phone so I could take notes. It was about a certain facelift-faking face oil that gave her skin such radiant results that she became "addicted to it." Keep scrolling to see which face oil she was referencing and learn about how and why it works so well.True Botanicals Renew Pure Radiance Face Oil $110Shop
Dern's partnership with True Botanicals came about naturally. When I say naturally, I mean they didn't reach out to her, send her products, and ask her to try them. Instead, it happened the other way around. Dern was so impressed with the brand's products, she reached out to them first. It all started when a makeup artist started to use the Pure Radiance Face Oil to prep Dern's skin ahead of makeup.
"A makeup artist used the Radiance Face Oil on me, and I became addicted," Dern said. "I fell in love with it because people told me I looked good. They were like 'oh my god, did you get a facelift? You look so glowy and amazing. I'm like 'no, I used one face oil.'"
She continued to use the oil, decided to learn more about the brand and its commitment to clean beauty and sustainability, and only then did she eventually reach out to the brand's owner, Hillary Peterson. That's how their partnership was born. I thought that was a pretty cool origin story.
After hearing Laura Dern rave about it, I knew I needed to learn more about this face oil, and try it out for myself, too. After all, if it could successfully fake a facelift, then I wanted in (I'm always looking for natural, non-invasive way to lift and define my natural facial contours).
The key ingredients in this anti-aging oil include chia seed and kiwi extract, which are both rich in omega-3s and strengthen the skin's natural barrier to keep moisture in and environmental toxins out. There's also passionfruit and papaya extract, which dissolve excess oil and impurities.
Since it's a face oil, and not a traditional cream moisturizer, acne-sufferers might be wary of it (and I totally understand that). Just know that there are two other iterations of this oil-one is formulated specifically for sensitive skin, and the other is formulated specifically for acne-prone skin. The former is the Calm Pure Radiance Face Oil, which is formulated with antioxidant-rich botanicals to what else but soothe easily-irritated skin. The latter is the Clear Pure Radiance Oil. Since I'm prone to congestion and minor breakouts on my forehead and chin, I chose to test out this version.True Botanicals Clear Pure Radiance Face Oil $110Shop
The Clear Oil is formulated slightly differently than the Renew Oil. It has hemp, pumpkin, and grapeseed oils, which help balance oil levels and unclog pores. There's also algae extract to keep the skin looking radiant and plump, which I appreciate, because I find that my skin tends to look dull and flat when I experience breakouts.
After using this for a few days, I'm happy to report that I haven't experienced any new breakouts, save for some small congested bumps on my forehead, but that's nothing new. My skin feels plump and it looks super glowy when I wake up each morning. Sure, I wouldn't say my skin looks lifted or contoured (and as of now, zero people have asked if I've had a facelift), but I've only been using it for a few days.
There's something else I want to mention, and that's the brand's Nutrient Mist. It's a cooling, hydrating, and all around lovely face mist that's formulated with ingredients like pH-balancing kombucha and moisture-boosting algae. I've been using it almost religiously since I attended the breakfast, during which Laura Dern mentioned she uses it everyday (and her son, too. She said he keeps one in his backpack. I would too, if I had one).
I spritz it in the morning to wake me up. I spritz it in the afternoon to refresh my skin. I spritz it at night to calm and hydrate my complexion before bed. If Laura Dern is addicted to the Pure Radiance Oil, then I'm addicted to the Nutrient Mist. There's just something about the fine mist, cool feel, and botanical scent that I can't do without lately. Now I'm about to say something I never thought I'd say, and thats thank you for the recommendation, Laura Dern!
Next, this little-known makeup brand deserves more attention, and here's why.
