This Is How Long You Can Expect Your Eyelash Extensions to Last

Anyone who's tried eyelash extensions has a full understanding of just how eye-opening and glamorous they can truly be.В Not only do they make your eyes stand out, but they also eliminate the need for mascara, which could essentially cut the time it takes you to apply your makeup in half-every single day. Despite the many great qualities that eyelash extensions provide, the fluttery bliss that comes with having them professionally applied, unfortunately, does not last forever. For this reason, it's important to understand just how long eyelash extensions will last once you have them installed.

Keep scrolling to find out how long you can expect different types of eyelash extensions to last to get the most out of their wear.

There are generally three types of eyelash extensions: mink, silk, and synthetic. Each of these options has a typical life span of approximately six to eight weeks. However, the true life span of the extensions is fully dependent on your own lash cycle. Because each extension is individually attached to a single lash, it will also naturally fall out when your real lashes shed. The regular life cycle of a natural lash can be as short as two or as long as eight weeks-thus, affecting how long your extensions will stay in place.

Since your lashes will be at different stages at any given time, they won't all fall out at once, and you might find that gaps start to appear a few weeks after having the extensions put in. This situation is typically rectified during a fill-in treatment, where lashes are reapplied to sparse areas to extend the general wear of your lashes. The lifespan of your lashes will also depend on how well you care for them after application-and, luckily, there are plenty of things you can do at home to help preserve the look.

How can you make eyelash extensions last longer?

Although there isn't much you can do to stop your natural lash shedding cycle, there are a few steps you can take to get the most out of your eyelash extensions. We asked the co-founders of Nouveau Lashes (who offer some of the most extensive lash extension treatments out there) for some tips on how to extend their lifespan.В Here's what they suggest:

"For the first 48 hours after your treatment, it's important not to allow water to come into contact with your lashes," explains Bridgette Softley, noting that water will reduce the efficacy of the adhesive used to keep the individual lashes in place. The same stands for anything that has to do with steam: "For two days afterward, don't steam your face, use a steam bath, swim or wash your face with hot water," Karen Betts adds. You should also avoid oil-based cleansers and moisturizers because these, too, have the ability to break down the lash adhesive.

The experts also warn against using anything to enhance the curl of the lashes. "Never try to perm or use lash curlers on your extensions," Betts explains, as these sorts of procedures are too traumatic for the delicate lash extensions to handle. And finally, make sure you brush through your lashes every single morning with a clean mascara wand to keep them looking their best.

How do you take off eyelash extensions?

If you've had enough of your lash extensions and decide to remove them before they naturally fall out, Softley says it's best to return to your technician to help preserve your natural lashes. "But we're women, and we know how busy women are, so we appreciate it's not always convenient. We also know how tempting it is to just pick at the adhesive bonds with your nails, but trust us-that will only lead to one thing: broken, stubby-looking natural lashes," she explains. Instead, use an eyelash extension remover like Nouveau Lashes Lash Extension Remover, which you can simply brush on, to dissolve the glue so you can remove each individual lash extension with ease.
