Ready or not, fall is just around the corner. Thus, it's only fitting to begin the gradual transition toward sweaters, booties, and, of course, warming makeup shades that are far more luxurious than the lighter fare of spring and summer. (Think browns, burgundies, and lush shades of berry with plenty of depth and drama.) Certain color palettes will always be en vogue, but other fall trends emerge unexpectedly with a fierce momentum propelling inspiration through the holidays and beyond. (Why fight the smolder?)
According to the runways (and a few of the best makeup artists in the business), next season's fall color palette will bring the heat, introducing warm and vibrant colors like grenadine, burnt sienna, and blush-worthyВ shades of pink that bring new (and gorgeous) meaning to the phrase "hot and heavy," not to mention a much-welcomed contrast to the cooler outdoor temperatures.
Fiery Shades of RedImaxtree
According to makeup artistВ Kira Nasrat,В whose clients include Bebe Rexha, Jessica Alba, and Olivia Culpo, the trends for fall are going to be hot and heavy: "I think we'll see more colors painted across the lids. I'm hoping to see brighter shades.… Currently, I'm really into a wash of colors. Perhaps even a dramatic cut crease bordering a graphic eye."В Not ready commit to a statement red eye? The bold color is just as fierce as a stand alone lip.В
Celebrity makeup artist Robert SesnekВ agrees: "I think for fall, you're going to see rich and vibrant shades, such as burgundies, reds, and pinks, especially for the eyes. These are great shades that will really make the eyes pop."В
He adds, "Depending on the application, they can be soft and modern or rich and dramatic. Plus, they are surprisingly wearable for brown, hazel, and blue eyes. My favorite shadows and palettes are Marc Jacobs Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow PaletteВ ($50), Charlotte TilburyВ Luxury Palette ($53), and ChanelВ Ombre PremiГЁre Longwear Powder EyeshadowВ ($32)."В
Shimmering Shades of BlackImaxtree
Black will always be a red carpet and runway staple, but next season, designers and makeup artists are making it extra. Their strategy? Shimmer-lots of it.В
Katie MellingerВ (who's worked with Emma Watson) says it best: "I think black is going to be big. Any type of black on the eyes in fun shapes and liners."Imaxtree
To keep a black palette polished, follow celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli's tip for fall and keep the rest of your look minimal, "I think we're going to see a lot of sheer skin, as we've been veering away from heavy, cakey foundations. There's a lot of natural beauty on the red carpet these days, which I love. Glitter has definitely been making its way back into the eye and lip categories."
Blushing Shades of PinkImaxtree
Pinks are often associated with spring and summer, but next season, they'll be making the transition to fall in a romantic, fresh-faced way. What's more, they play well with every feature, from eyes to cheekbones to lips.В
Celebrity makeup artist Stevi ChristineВ likes the idea of primrose and ballet slipper pink for fall, explaining that even a simple wash of pink over the cheeks will do the trend justice.ВImaxtree
To keep the fall color palette less precious, try a light pink lip paired with a bronzed, earthy cheek and eye. Despite the fever for shimmer this fall, Christine explains that she actually prefers matte for the season.
"I'm hoping for less shimmer. Matte looks gorgeous with fall wardrobe colors. I love for the clothes to make the statement and the makeup to complement."
Earthy Shades of Brown and PlumImaxtree
Brown will always be aВ non-negotiable trend for fall, but layering with shimmer and contrasting shades of bronze keeps it exciting and unique for the upcoming season. As Scibelli says, "Staples that I'd like to keep for fall are those deep plums and earthy brown tones." Try layering this fall color palette to create a deep smoky eye.Imaxtree
Follow Scibelli's lead and take the look further by swiping a deep almost-brown plumВ shade across your lips. Just remember proper protocol when it comes to prep. Exfoliating your lips will keep them in tip-top shape pre-stain.
Smoldering Shades of Orange and RustImaxtree
Celebrity makeup artist Joanna SimkinВ thinks orange is going to be a big trend for fall. "With the changing leaves, the darkening skies, and releases like the Urban DecayВ Naked Heat Palette, burnt oranges, rusts, and sienna are all having a major beauty moment," she says. "Bonus: Anybody can wear some shade of orange and look amazing-it adds instant warmth to eyes, cheeks, or lips!"ВImaxtree
ChristineВ agrees, sharing her love for oranges this fall: "I predict we'll see burnt oranges on eyes and/or lips; it's such a beautifulВ fallВ colorВ that works well with brunettes, blonds, and those with blue eyes. You'll really see your eyes pop with thisВ color."
Brooding Shades of Burgundy and BerryImaxtree
As Sesnek explained, not only will burgundy be essential for lips this fall, it's also a strikingВ addition to your lids. Layered with shades of copper, port, and bronze (and maybe even a hint of shimmer), it's a good look to keepВ bookmarked, as it effortlessly transitions from fall through the winter holidays and cocktail hour.Imaxtree
To keep this fall color palette work-appropriate, stick to a simple burgundy or berry-stained lip: "I also love burgundy… on the lips and/or eye. It's one of my favorite lip colors, to pair with clean skin and a bit of mascara. A deep lip always wins for me inВ fall," explains Christine.В
A bold lip is also a favorite of Mellinger. When asked what color palette she loves most for fall her response was short and appropriately sweet:В "Definitely berry lips-they're classic and universally flattering."
