The New Nude Lip: How to Wear It, According to an NYC Girl

Whether it's New York, Los Angeles, Miami or any other major city, beauty styles vary vastly even within one country. In New York, the beauty is no-nonsense (not surprisingly). Think neutral tones in natural finishes. A look that resident New Yorker, Emily Luciano of Lovely Luciano, embraces. And a look that totally aligns with one of spring's biggest trends: the nude lip.

The nude lip never really goes out of style, but it does evolve. This season, it's all about creamy nudes. Say goodbye to the cool, ultra-matte nudes of seasons past. It's time for a believable nude that mimics the hue of your bare lips, in creams, shimmers, and even glossy finishes. So, how do NYC girls interpret the trend in real life? Luciano gave us all the details on her quintessentially east coast take on the trend.

To start off her look, Luciano chose a soft eye in brown and cream shades with just a hint of shimmer. “I added the light tones from Tom Ford's Eyeshadow Quad in Nude Dip ($82) all over my eyelids, and then went in with the darker tones on the outer lid creating a subtle smoky eye,” she says. Next, she applied mascara and added the glow with Charlotte Tilbury's Wonderglow Instant Soft-Focus Beauty Flash ($55). Which she tapped along her brow bone and cheekbones.

Defined brows are key for anchoring a neutral look. Defined hers with Anastasia's Duo Brow PowderВ ($23) and a small brush, using a spoolie to brush through after so the end result was natural.

For the cheeks, Luciano chose Nars Blush in Super OrgasmВ ($30). She prefers a light dusting on just the apples of the cheeks.

When it comes to getting the lip look just right, Luciano employs two noteworthy techniques. First, blend. “I apply the lipstick on the center of my lips, then use my finger to blend it out to create a subtle, natural look.” Secondly, brighten. “One trick I always do is add highlighter glow on my cupids bow after applying lipstick to brighten up my upper lip.” For this nude lip, Luciano used Charlotte Tilbury's Hot Lips Lipstick in Penelope Pink ($34), a peachy-nude with warm undertones.

Not too glowy, not too dark or defined, with just enough color to feel polished-Luciano's NYC take on the nude lip trend is all about subtlety. “I feel like a nude lip brightens your eyes and creates a very soft, beautiful. I love how simple and natural the look feels and I would wear this every day, even for a night out” В
