Frank Ocean Gave Us the Skincare Routine Pharrell Won't Share

If Mariah Carey is the "elusive chanteuse," then Frank Ocean is the male equivalent-the chanteur, if you will. The political activist and creator of dreamy music that swirls out of speakers and into theВ atmosphereВ like slow, colorful brush strokes isn't often public (unless you consider the fact that he finallyВ de-privatized hisВ Instagram account less of a barrier to the singer's world).В So when he recently conducted a rare interview with GQ, we immediately stopped what we were doing, threw Blonde on shuffle, and took notes, particularly when he opened up about his-gasp!-skincare routine.В

"I feel like men just go to sleep," he tells the magazine. "They may wash their face or they don't even bother-they go to sleep with the day face on. You really need to do a gentle wash and put a night moisturizer on."В Just when we thought we were impressedВ with Ocean's knowledge base of products and methodologies, he hit us with theВ high-levelВ proficiency reserved for that of, say, a beauty editor.

"You can't have the retinol in your creams in the day because it makes you more sun-sensitive, so you wanna throw that on at night. I need the night cream because when I wake up I feel very beautiful, moisturized and ready to have people making eye contact with me, ready to look above my eyebrow, below the eyebrow."

Suffice to say, Ocean's skin must be as smooth as his velvety vocal offerings. Poking fun at his colleague Pharrell, another male musician withВ inexplicablyВ beautiful skin (perhaps only possible with the use of a time machine), Ocean says the artist is too tight-lipped about his routine. "It's been all these years, and Pharrell still hasn't given us the keys yet. He just says 'exfoliate,' but it's not just 'exfoliate': We need more keys." Amen.
