While you can find every color under the sun in eye shadow form, narrowing down the infinite selection to the shades that'll make your peepers pop is the tough part. In order to help you find hues that'll flatter your skin tone, we called in Jo Levy, director of artistry for Rouge Bunny Rouge.

Levy says almost all shades in the neutral category will flatter dark complexions as long as the finish is a soft shimmer or demi-matte. “I recommend steering clear of any light shades in a matte finish, such as a bone or cream-colored shadow, as they can appear mismatched and stark on the lids,” Levy says. If you prefer matte shadows for daytime, choose deeper nudes like light chocolate and tawny brown.

For contour and definition, try something richer. “Hues of dark charcoal gray, chocolate browns, and deep plums in either a shimmer or matte texture perfectly complement darker skin, especially when you want your eyes to stand out,” Levy says.Rouge Bunny Rouge Long-Lasting Matt Eye Shadow in Blackpepper Jay $31ShopStila Eye Shadow Compact in Java $18ShopUrban Decay Eyeshadow in Rockstar $18Shop
When it comes to real color, jewel tones look best. “A bright indigo blue or a vibrant royal purple eye shadow, applied wet for more intensity, will look amazing on deeper skin tones,” Levy says. Levy says the texture and finish of light-toned shimmers are always flattering, but don't be afraid to wear a true metallic. “A golden bronze shimmer or silver metallic shadow have an especially striking effect for evening.”Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow in Baby Peach $29ShopMake Up For Ever Artist Shadow in Platinum $21Shop
