Every time Lizzo walks a red carpet, she makes a statement with her hair and makeup look. It only makes sense, considering that her music makes a statement, too, but that's something her fans already know. In fact, it's one of the reasons why her music is so good, and why the world can't stop listening to it-specifically her songs 'Truth Hurts' and 'Good as Hell.' We dare you to listen to one or both of those songs and not feels an instant, almost overwhelming, boost in confidence.
Last night the singer performed at the annual BET Awards. Ahead of her performance she walked the red carpet, wearing a custom woodgrain hat made from hair that her hairstylist Shelby Swain had hand-painted. It was a whole look, and one that was far from ordinary, which is why we wanted the details. Keep reading to see every single drugstore product that was used to created Lizzo's red-carpet hairstyle.
Here's what Lizzo looked like while walking the BET Awards carpet. She wore a woodgrain pattern dress and boots, along with the aforementioned matching hat. "Lizzo has a clear vision for wardrobe and accessories. The hair decisions were left to my creative discretion, however as a team we often aim to create cohesiveness," Swain tells us. "Lizzo definitely wanted to have a themed look. Once the wood grain inspiration was mentioned for wardrobe. I felt I had to mimic the look and master hair art to compliment."
In order to tie Lizzo's hair into the established theme, Swain created a woodgrain hat that was made from hair, which she hand-painted and sewed into a braided base on Lizzo's head (here's a closer look at her artistry). Under the woodgrain hat, Swain pulled Lizzo's own hair back into a bun, all the while maintaining and accentuating her natural curly texture with a set of very specific drugstore products.
To start off, Swain cleansed and conditioned Lizzo's hair with Suave's Natural Shea Butter & Pure Coconut Oil Shampoo and Conditioner ($5), which is created specifically for natural hair. "The conditioner provides a great amount of slip, which helped to detangle and bring out her luxurious curls-thanks to the shea butter and pure coconut oil found in this line!
Next, Swain reached for yet another conditioner (Yes, that's two separate conditioners used in tandem). This is a trick Swain used to "deeply moisturize" Lizzo's hair and "help protect against frizz." The product in question was also from Sauve. It was the brand's Natural Shea Butter & Pure Coconut Oil Leave-In Conditioner ($5). After it was applied, Swain allowed Lizzo's hair to air dry. (The less heat we use on our hair, the better). "Once hair is air-dried, pull all of the hair back and tie it up into a ponytail by gathering all the hair and wrapping it around with a hair tie… To ensure the bun is secure, insert Bobby pins into the center of the bun."Suave Professionals Natural Shea Butter & Pure Coconut Oil Define & Shine Serum Gel $5Shop
To finish the look, Swain used two more Suave products. The first was a gel-serum hybrid. "For today's looks I relied heavily on with Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Define & Shine Gel Serum," Swain says. "It is fantastic with smoothing down edges and really slicking hair back into that afro puff you saw on the carpet." After that, Swain finished the look with Suave's Firm Control Finishing Hairspray ($3), which helped "seal the look for the night!"Shelby SwainВ
