Experts Agree: These Are the Best Hairstyles for Long Faces

Stop everything: The search for the best haircuts for long faces is officially over because we've got them all right here for you. While we might all stumble into the hairdresser's clutching a picture of the latest A-lister who has the most covetable hair, the truth is their hairstyle just might not suit your face shape (nope, still not over the Rachel). So what's the solution, especially for those with longer faces? And where do you start when you know certain hairstyles and cuts accentuate the very feature you're trying to minimise?В

Fear not, for we've enlisted the expert advice from two talentedВ celebrity hairstylists Adam Reed and George Northwood. They have worked in the industry for years cutting hair and working out just what kind of hairstyle suits which type of face shapes. For longer faces, they highlighted just what you can do to minimise the length with certain hairstyles, but also looked to the kind of cuts you can ask for to ensure you're making the most of your look. George Northwood says that "long faces need hair that gives them width for balance," which is exactly what SJP has done here. By adding volume she's achieved that width Northwood is talking about. Another trick is to add in a fringe but nothing too blunt. Adam Reed suggests that a "soft shattered fringe is always great because that balances out the length."В

Jessica Alba

Reed also says that when he's styling hair, "adding volume and width is nice as it softens down the face shape." Jessica Alba's look here has done exactly that with added texture in the width at the bottom of her style. Check out our guide to the best curling tongsВ to re-create a similar look.

Victoria Beckham

Another trick is the long bob, Г В la Victoria Beckham, but avoid a bob as Northwood says as "those can elongate the face."В

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence similarly has a long bob, which Northwood says is great because "it gives a triangular width that's brilliant for more balance."

Jeanne Damas

Current French It girl Jeanna Damas is seriously channeling Jane Birkin, which is idealВ if you've got a long face, says Northwood: "If you are going mid-length or longer, really think about getting a proper Jane Birkin fringe."

Alexa Chung

Want a bob? Then opt for a centre-sweeping parting like Alexa Chung, says Reed, as "a lob with a shattered face line is great for balancing out."В

However, if you decide to not opt for a fringe, then you should add in extra width "through a big blow dry and other styling to add thickness to the hair," recommends Northwood. В
