These Eye Shadow and Lipstick Pairings Were Made for Each Other

For years, idealized beauty "rules" had us believe we could either play up our eyes or lips-never both. "How garish," I'm sure some oppressive piece on the subject reads. But those days have come and gone; we're more about doing whatever it is we feel like, whether that's painting our faces with more than one product or wearing none at all.

Yes, 2018 felt like one giant record scratch; we saw huge strides being made for intersectional feminism (and just as many frightening setbacks). When it comes to makeup, the choice is yours. There are no rules about how you should present yourself. So break with convention. Apply colorful eye shadow and bright lipstick. Wear glitter. Be happy.

Below, find our favorite color pairings and the products that'll help you get the look.

Technicolor and Sheer Fuchsia

Kat Borchart

If you're going full-on Technicolor (think '80s club kid) on your eyes, there's no reason you can't still wear lip color. Instead of doing something bold pigment-wise, try a sheer poppy pink with a ton of gloss. The vinyl texture of your lips will pull the sparkly look together without making you feel like you're wearing a costume.

Products: Inglot Eye Shadow in 371; Lemonhead LA Electric Spacejam in Marina ($24); Kryolan Cream Color Circle UV in Dayglow ($23); Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom in Poppy

Petal Pink and Siren Red

"When you think about it, pink and red are different tones in the same family. Plus it's a juxtaposition-one element being hard and one soft," says Katie Jane Hughes on her signature look. She explains how textures are both hard and soft, the red is powerful and bold and the pink is dreamy and ethereal. "It's all about balance, and that's why it works so well."

Products: Jillian Dempsey Lid Tint Satin Eye Shadow in Dew ($28); Nars Blush in Impassioned ($30) and Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment in Light My Fire ($26)

Golden Brown and Beige

Kat Borchart

"Using brown mattes all over the eyes and the same tone on lips will sculpt and define your features," explains Ashlee Glazer, Laura Geller's global artistic director. Then go in and layer over any flat, matte shade with a glowy, dew-like texture to add dimension to your lips and eyes.

Products: Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Colour in Sun Worship and Young Adonis; Tom Ford Lipstick in Temptation Waits

Berry and Burgundy

Jason Kim

Monochromatic makeup is still one of the easiest ways to look undeniably cool-there's not a ton of fuss or blending, just shades that match and immediately make an impact. Get into it with a super glossy eye and matte red wine-stained lip.

Products: Make Up For Ever Flash Color Pot in Wine Red and Carmin ($19); Too Faced Perfect Eyes Eyeliner in Perfect Black; Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Protectant Cream ($24)

Chrome Metallic and Dusty Rose

Jerome Corpuz

A super-metallic jewel-like shadow so shimmery it almost looks wet looks incredible with a dusty rose pink lip balm. "Metallic and a little grungy-it's the perfect rock 'n' roll pewter eye to pair with rosy lips," suggests Kelli Bartlett, director of makeup artistry for Glamsquad. Basically, your face will be a gilded, glowy dream.

Products: MAC Pigment in Old Gold ($22); L'OrГ©al Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator ($12) and Colour Riche Eyeliner in Brown

FYI: These are the best maroon lipsticks, hands down.В
