I Finally Found the Right Foundation Shade for My Skin Tone

Some people may think it's strange that I pull out four different foundation shades when I'm doing my makeup, but that's the norm for me. It's always been an agonizing experience trying to find the right foundation shade to match my dark skin tone and various undertones. I can never find just one.

To suffice, I have to cocktail a bunch of similar shades together in order to achieve my perfect match. The struggle is so, so real. Many women of color have shared similar experiences. For so long there were a limited number of “dark” foundation shades on the market that catered to a diverse range of dark skin tones. Slowly but surely that's changing, and more brands are offering extensive shade ranges.

You'd think that after the countless foundations I've tried I could confidently stand behind one of them as the most on-point colorway for my complexion-but nope. This was all true until a few days ago when my co-worker asked if I wanted to try one of the latest launches from Nars, their Velvet Matte Foundation Sticks ($45). I've always been a fan of Nars because it's an OG shade-inclusive brand and I've been obsessed with the Nars Radiant Creamy ConcealerВ ($30) for, like, ever. But of course, I was still skeptical. I thought,В Will one of these really work for me? I'll probably have to try a few.

At first glance, I picked up the shade “Trinidad” because it looked the closest to my complexion. I was impressed by the compact packaging and the built-in brush on the other side. I usually diss the idea of using a built-in brush because I'm afraid the foundation application will be subpar, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I swiped a few streaks of this foundation on my jaw area and hairline-my go-to spots for testing foundation shades-and the brush helped the foundation glide onto my skin so smoothly. It's moisturizing, matte texture hugged my skin so perfectly and offered up just enough coverage to conceal my dark spots. It was like foundation shade love at first sight. It didn't look too light or too dark; its yellow undertones were just right.

I am now a changed woman because this foundation shade literally looks like a second, glowier layer of my skin. One of my co-workers even said that my skin looked airbrushed after swiping it on. After drinks with a girlfriend, I got home super late and didn't see a single crease underneath my eyes or on my smile lines. You know how cakey foundations take forever to get off? Not this one. It feels too good to be true. This is not an ad; this is a testimony of a girl who finally found The One. If you haven't yet, I want you to find happiness too. I suggest you give this magical foundation a whirl.
